Ingredients

Serves : 6
  • 1/2 cup Tur dal/yellow pigeon peas lentil


  • 1/4 cup red lentil


  • 2 onion sliced


  • 2 tomatoes chopped


  • 4 curry leaves


  • 2 green chillies, broken in 2


  • 2 tablespoons of Oil


  • 2 tablespoons of ghee


  • 1/4 cup tamarind pulp


  • 2 teaspoons sambar powder


  • 2 teaspoons ground coconut


  • 2 teaspoon salt


  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds


  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder


  • 5-6 mini potatoes


  • 8-10 fenugreek seeds


  • 1/8 teaspoon hing/aesafoetida


  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves


  • 2 dry red chillies for tadka


  • 4 curry leaves for tadka


  • 2 tablespoons of ghee for tadka


  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds for tadka

Directions

  • heat oil and add mustard and fenugreek seeds.
  • Add curry leaves, green chillies, and onions and saute. After the Onions have turned pink add the potatoes.
  • also add tomatoes and saute.
  • Add a sambar powder and mix well.
  • Add tamarind pulp and mix well. Cover and cook this until the potatoes are soft.
  • check if the potatoes are done, prik a knife thought a potato and you will come to know if the they are cooked well.
  • wash the dals and soak for 10 minutes
  • add turmeric powder
  • take 3 whistles in a pressure cooker, cook until soft and mushy
  • add this dal to the tamarind prepation and mix.
  • Add the prepared coconut paste
  • mix it well.
  • Prepare tampering by heating oil, frying mustard seeds, curry leaves and broken red chillies.
  • Pour the tempering and serve
